Who Gets the Wedding Ring?
![]()
In Pennsylvania, an engagement ring, as a symbol of the intended marriage, is given with the implicit condition that it will be returned if the marriage does not take place.
Fault, no matter who is responsible for the failure of the marriage to take place, is not an issue with regards to the ring. This is the law of Pennsylvania as established by the courts several years ago.
An exception to the return rule may be found where the engagement ring was given on a holiday, i.e. Valentine's Day, Christmas, etc... wherein the ring may be found to have been an unconditional gift.
